Alerta de tsunami en Papúa Nueva Guinea tras sismo de magnitud 7.4

Dos terremotos de 7.4 y 5.9 grados en la escala abierta de Richter sacudieron la región de Nueva Bretaña, al este de Papúa Nueva Guinea, sin que las autoridades hayan informado aún sobre víctimas o daños materiales.

El hipocentro del primer sismo fue localizado a 63 kilómetros de profundidad, a 133 kilómetros al sur de Kokopo y a 680 al noreste de Port Moresby, la capital papuana, según el Servicio Geológico de Estados Unidos, que mide la actividad sísmica de todo el mundo.

Tras este temblor, el Centro de Alertas por Tsunami del Pacífico alertó de la posibilidad de olas de entre 0.3 y 1 metro en algunas partes del litoral papuano y descartó cualquier riesgo en otras zonas.

El servicio geológico situó la segunda sacudida a 64 kilómetros de profundidad, a 109 kilómetros al suroeste de Kokopo y a 702 al noreste de Port Moresby.

La isla de Nueva Guinea, cuya mitad occidental pertenece a Indonesia, se asienta sobre el “Anillo de Fuego del Pacífico”, una zona de gran actividad sísmica y volcánica que es sacudida al año por unos 7 mil temblores, la mayoría moderados.

Un sismo de 7 grados en el Mar de Bismarck, al este de Papúa Nueva Guinea, provocó en 1998 una ola gigante que arrasó decenas de aldeas y causó más de 2 mil 200 muertos en la mayor tragedia en la historia de Papúa Nueva Guinea.
